I'm afraid i don't have a song of the year yet. Ever since we got our new car and i have discovered the joys of a cd player in a car, i have done nothing but play FM,SN and LB bootlegs and demo's. The result being that i am totally out of what's new . The only song that is stuck in my head right now is Lilly Allen's "Fuck You" which is no match for Elliot Brood i know, but i like it anyway

1. Can still remember when I heard this first at their gig over a year ago, was absolutely riveted. And finally it's been released. It used to be quite loose live so that's what you'll get (not the best recording but what the heck):
2. He's the more positive version of Joose, I guess. Second best track of the year is Hummaus and it starts at 2:13:
3. Stevieish imagery mixed with gothic and Karate Kid - stuff that none of us butch men are supposed to like but her music is just too good:
4. It's been the year of Moroder/Human League soundalikes breaking into the mainstream (Little Boots for one). The name 'Juan Maclean' even sounds like a perverse twist of the Sheffield band's name. Will probably sound all passé in years to come but works for me splendidly now:
5. Anything could go here, including that band that Gerald linked me to in his PM a while ago.
Two New Order offshoots will be releasing some new stuff soon, so will The Fall, and that's just the old farts. Have to pick the new Prefab Sprout then, even though I've only heard this track once so far and it's still to grow on me. At least the intro sounds hilarious! Don't let me down with the new album, Paddy.
I saw them on Later with Jools, which is my source to discover new music lately.
This is another one that i like a lot : William Elliot Whitmore :
and how about this one : Ely Paperboy Reed (though i must admit it does not sound very new)
and this guy i also discovered through "Later with Jools": Joe Bonamassa
and yes i know; i'm conservative in my taste of music

3: yeah Bat For Lashes, sounds promising in the begeinning, but with those drums it becomes soooooo slick.
4:
you just can't do that to me!
which one are you referring to? The Rural Alberta Advantage?
BTW. Prefab Sprout can be great but This song just stinks, Gaius. Come on you can do better.
But in my book: Tytto, the first song in your #2 wins.
What do you think of my suggestion in post nr. 1 of this thread?

paper boy started incredible, far from conservative, but further on it became a little cheesy to my ears. great voice though!
Bonamassa is a great instrumentalist, but I simply hate his musical sense and approach.

So I vote for Whitman! Didn't know him, so thank you!

Love the Elliott Brood song Gerald posted. And Gerald I'm not surprised you like William Elliot Whitmore, I've seen him live twice, once supporting Lanegan! He's fantastic, has lots of cool stories live too.
Like Gaius, Bat For Lashes' Daniel is one of my faves this year and I love the Joose Keskitalo song he posted too.
I really like the new Pearl Jam song. Not too cool perhaps but it rocks!
Also I love St Vincent!
Pachuca Sunrise
Pachuca Sunrise (Live)
The Pig War
The Pig War (Live) - Dave Knudson's awesome on guitar at the 1:30 mark
When We Escape
When We Escape (Live)
Matt
BTW, Sharon those two songs are truly great! Hadn't heard pearl jam yet! Cool!
And Matt, I like Minus the Bear a little but are these all song of the year for you?

And to answer your other question, those were the first three songs that came to mind for me.
Matt
The whole album is good (esp. Happy House, One Day, Tonight)! Give it a try dear.
Except that it was released in 2007.
Fucking Rod Stewart wannabes!
J/k, was a great way to start my morning! I can definitely hear the Lindsey influence that you've mentioned ever so often too.
I already started to like it this morning! Really, #5 was just supposed to be something that's coming out this year that I'm looking forward to. And Paddy needs some support after taking a Buckinghamesque 9 years to finish the new album. Hope he's got a few tracks worthy of the classics on the album, this one isn't really on that level (but then it's not the first single either).
If you're not accepting that as my #5, I'll give you the Finnish Lindsey Buckingham soundalike (he's listed Lindsey amongst his influences) who brought another great solo album out this year. Sounds like something off Under The Skin almost:

Beautiful, by the way.
Thanks for the help Matt!:
here's some more candidates for me:
LIVE!!! what an INCREDIBLE drummer!
And this one is only to judge if you sit through the whole thing. Great lyric BTW.
